Chapter 304: 286. FRANÇOIS SÉVÉRIN DESGRAVIERS MARCEAU. _French General._

[Born at Chartres, in France, 1769. Killed at Hochsteinbach, in Germany, 1796. Aged 27.] Brave, generous, and heroic, gifted for great military achievements. Twice narrowly escaped the guillotine; once for gallantly protecting a beautiful woman from the brutality of the soldiers. He fell mortally wounded in the forest of Hochsteinbach; and the armies of France and Austria both showed honour to his memory by firing volleys of artillery over his grave. [From the marble in the Tuileries by Ed. Dumont.]
