[Born at Vicenza, in Italy, 1518. Died there, 1580. Aged 62.] He largely and accurately studied and described the Roman style of architecture, and adapted it to modern purposes with admirable success. Inigo Jones may be called his disciple; and the Banquetting House at Whitehall is a good example of the style called _Palladian_. He was small in stature, and agreeable in countenance. His most celebrated buildings are at Venice, Verona, and Vicenza. [This bust is by Leandro Biglioschi.]
