Introduction: Luke Ambler and Jonny Mason’s Mission
Luke Ambler and Jonny Mason are dedicated to empowering individuals to embrace their "Mission Possible"—fostering incremental, sustainable changes that yield transformative outcomes. While their participation in IRONMAN events showcases their commitment to endurance sports, it is rooted in a profound purpose: addressing mental health challenges and suicide prevention among men.
Luke found solace in physical activity as a source of self-clarity; following the tragic suicide of his brother-in-law, Andy Roberts, he founded Andy’s Man Club to provide support through self-help and peer-to-peer interactions. Jonny Mason, a close friend of Luke’s who has also lost loved ones to suicide, joins him in navigating the highs and lows of every IRONMAN journey. Together, they aim to shed light on suicide—a leading cause of death among men under 50—and prevent further tragedy by cultivating a supportive community.
Background and Shared Journey
Both 35 years old and hailing from Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, Luke and Jonny share a bond forged through resilience and a commitment to mental wellness. In 2025, they embarked on a bold challenge: completing five UK IRONMAN events in a single season. Their efforts exceeded expectations, with finishes in IRONMAN 70.3 events in Bolton (England) and Swansea (Wales), as well as full IRONMAN races in Leeds (England) and Tenby (Wales).
Their momentum captured the attention of IRONMAN itself, which offered them ambassador roles at the IRONMAN World Championship in Nice. This elevated their mission to an extraordinary scale, resulting in two consecutive full IRONMAN races within seven days—hosted in two of the circuit’s most challenging locations: Nice and Wales.
Overcoming Adversity: Paths to Purpose
Luke’s athletic journey began in rugby, where he was scouted by Leeds Rhinos before being released, triggering a decline in mental health. However, his rugby background instilled discipline, resilience, and a passion for physical activity—qualities that later fueled his transition to endurance sports. In 2016, following Andy’s suicide, he founded Andy’s Man Club to support men navigating mental health struggles.
Jonny Mason, a father of three and passionate triathlete, similarly found healing through IRONMAN after losing loved ones to suicide. Both athletes emphasize that IRONMAN is not merely about finishing races but about using the platform to normalize mental health conversations.
The "Mission Possible" Campaign: Beyond Finishes
Luke explains, "It was never just about crossing finish lines. It was about using the stage of IRONMAN to demonstrate that ordinary people can undertake extraordinary challenges while raising awareness for a greater cause."
Jonny echoes this vision: "Our journey aims to inspire others to chase their own 'possible.' In doing so, we amplify support for Andy’s Man Club, advocating the powerful message: 'It’s okay to talk!'"
Societal Impact: Suicide Prevention at Scale
According to the Office for National Statistics (UK), males accounted for approximately 75% of all suicide deaths in 2023. Globally, suicide remains a critical public health issue: in the U.S., it ranked as the eleventh leading cause of death in 2023, claiming over 49,000 lives.
To date, Andy’s Man Club supports over 6,000 men weekly through hundreds of peer-to-peer groups and public speaking initiatives. Luke underscores their mission: "Challenges like 'Mission Possible' are not about medals—they inspire men to speak up, find their 'possible,' and recognize they are not alone."
Personal Resilience: Discipline as a Mental Health Tool
Jonny reflects on his transformation: "Before triathlon, I was not sporty. As life priorities shifted, sport was neglected, leading to poor habits: excessive drinking, unhealthy eating, and self-neglect. I realized change was urgent. Starting with running, I gradually integrated endurance challenges with Luke.
Crossing the finish line is exhilarating, but the true victory lies in the process: training hours, discipline, and family sacrifices. The hardest part is balancing training with life; the finish line brings gratitude, not just celebration."
Luke highlights IRONMAN’s mental benefits: "An IRONMAN tests physical and mental resilience—qualities I’ve honed through sport. It represents community, inspiration, and growth. Each race unites people overcoming struggles, a narrative aligned with Andy’s Man Club’s mission to prioritize mental health."
