Anthony Ramos’ Marathon Journey: From Actor to Runner, With Purpose and Progress

Introduction

Anthony Ramos, celebrated for his dynamic career as an actor (Grammy winner for Hamilton, roles in A Star Is Born and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), is shifting focus to a new challenge: running the 2025 New York City Marathon. Fueled by a desire for holistic growth, the 34-year-old actor turned to long-distance running, leveraging discipline, mentorship, and purpose to redefine his routine—proving that passion and consistency can bridge any gap, even between stage/film stardom and the streets of NYC.

A New Challenge: The Decision to Run

Ramos’ marathon journey began with a personal awakening: on his last birthday, he resolved to prioritize health and embrace a bold challenge. Though he’d dabbled in sports (baseball) and stayed active, running long distances was uncharted territory. “I was just ready to make some changes in my life and live a healthier lifestyle,” he recalls. “The NYC Marathon felt like the perfect opportunity to lock in a different way.”

This wasn’t a casual goal—Ramos approached it with the same intensity as his acting roles. Early on, even 3–4 miles felt daunting, but consistency and mentorship would shift his trajectory.

Training with Purpose: From Rookie to Distance Mastery

To build his foundation, Ramos tapped Olympic coach Des Linden, whose expertise became his guiding light. “She’s been really encouraging. She’ll send me workouts every week and remind me to get in speed work or focus on endurance,” he shares. Over time, consistency transformed his relationship with running.

“Now even a half-marathon is light work,” Ramos notes with pride, crediting Linden’s lessons and unwavering discipline. Key to his progress was flexibility: running whenever and wherever possible—“ten miles in Toronto after a film festival,” or navigating unplanned routes in Venice. “You just go,” he explains, turning chaos into opportunity.

Beyond the Physical: Running as Mind, Body, and Creativity

Ramos discovered more than physical endurance in running: it became a sanctuary for mental clarity and inspiration. “Some of my best ideas come on these runs,” he says, citing meditation and reflection as core benefits. “It’s not just about the runner’s high—it’s about the space to think deeply.”

His dedication to the sport extends beyond the finish line: he’ll keep running post-November 2 (his 34th birthday), using it as a toolkit for creativity and growth long-term.

Essentials for Success: Gear, Nutrition, and Tracking

Preparation is non-negotiable. Ramos prioritizes Brooks Glycerin Max shoes for support, recommending the brand’s range for all levels. For nutrition, he advises electrolyte-rich hydration, carb loading, and snack gels—“fuel is everything,” he insists.

To track progress, he uses Strava but warns against self-doubt: “I’ll see Des’s times on there like six or seven-minute miles, and I said, ‘I gotta stop looking at this.’” Instead, he focuses on consistency and personal milestones.

Accountability and Impact: Running With Community

Ramos isn’t running alone. Supported by his brother, a former teacher, and others, he’s turning the race into a mission: raising funds for his Scholarship Plus initiative, which supports opportunities for underserved youth. “There’s been a lot of amazing opportunities that have come through this,” he explains, tying his personal challenge to collective good.

Recovery and Long-Term Vision

Recovery is as critical as training. “Staying off my feet when I can is crucial, and quality sleep is non-negotiable,” he notes, adding that self-care—like recent Thai massages—boosts resilience. Post-marathon, he’ll continue running, with goals like a Puerto Rico half-marathon and promoting his upcoming film, A House of Dynamite.

Conclusion

For Ramos, the marathon is more than a race—it’s a testament to growth, discipline, and the power of community. From stage to streets, his journey proves that purpose-driven action can turn “impossible” into “inevitable.” As he crosses the NYC finish line, he’ll carry not just physical endurance, but a legacy of inspiration for others.

“This isn’t the end; it’s a new beginning,” he says. And with that mindset, the next chapter is already written.
