Damar Hamlin: From Football Field to Heartfelt Purpose Through Film and Resilience
A New Chapter in Acting and Personal Reflection
Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills safety, has steered his career beyond football’s gridiron, embarking on a new acting endeavor with the Hallmark Channel film The More the Merrier, a project deeply rooted in his personal journey. Though he has prior acting experience from middle school, Hamlin now recognizes a profound respect for the craft, acknowledging the dedication and artistry required to deliver impactful performances. “I’ve earned a new respect for actors and just their craft and the dedication, the time, everything that it takes to get the masterpiece and the results that they get,” he reflects.
A Life-Altering Moment: Cardiac Arrest and Resilience
The project holds personal weight, as it is inspired by Hamlin’s own near-fatal experience on January 2, 2023. During a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he suffered cardiac arrest after a blunt chest injury during a tackle. Medical teams administered nine minutes of CPR and a defibrillator to restore his heartbeat, marking a critical turning point in his life. As the three-year anniversary of this event approaches, Hamlin continues to grapple with its emotional reverberations before stepping onto the field.
Embracing Fear, Transforming Perspective
Hamlin emphasizes that fear is an inescapable human emotion, but its impact depends on how one responds. “Fear is a real thing… I think what makes people different is what you do with the fear. If you can persevere through the fear, you cannot let the fear handicap you,” he explains, noting he teaches this lesson to his 10-year-old brother. By reframing fear as a universal experience, Hamlin advocates for embracing it rather than shying away: “I really want people to embrace it, to know that it’s a real thing, and to know that everybody else is experiencing it too, in their own way.”
Redefining Purpose and Living in the Moment
Hamlin acknowledges profound life changes since the incident, describing a “deeper connection to my purpose and why I’m here.” He attributes this clarity to leaning into faith, stating, “I let that community and I let that feeling, everything that I do as far as my actions and my movements, my partnerships, whatever I do, I truly allow God to just lead the way.” While the full scope of these changes remains unfolding, he focuses on living in the present: “I’m still in the moment, sorting out all of the unique things and chaos that came my way… just being in the moment, staying present, will propel me.”
HeartMates: Inspiration and Community
The More the Merrier features five real-life members of Abbott’s HeartMates program, individuals who have overcome heart issues like Hamlin’s—including heart transplants and open-heart surgery. As an ambassador for the initiative, Hamlin cites these youth as his primary inspiration: “They allowed me to feel related to, understood, and just seeing people at different phases of their life experiencing things that may be a little bit different to me, but we all relate in a way.” Their stories fuel his resilience, and he now integrates them into his daily routine.
Gaming Day Rituals and Motivation
Hamlin’s “extra prayed up” mindset has fostered close bonds with HeartMates, including a pre-game ritual: texting Zeke, the first HeartMates draftee, for motivation. “He texts me before every game and just gives me that motivation. His text will be something like, ‘Man, no matter what, win, lose or draw, I appreciate you. You mean so much to me,’” Hamlin shares. This connection grounds him, reminding him of purpose beyond football: “It kind of brings me back down to earth and just realize that this is just a game, and I’m able to have things in my life that give me purpose even beyond the game.”
From “Why Me?” to Empowering Others
Rather than dwelling on the “why me?” question, Hamlin now channels his experience into uplifting others. “I always just try to find a positive outlook to keep myself going,” he says. “There’s so many times in my life growing up that I was holding on to, so it kind of changed who I am as a person.” His journey, he asserts, has transformed him, and he remains grateful for the lessons learned: “My life has truly just changed and it’ll forever be different… but reasons that I don’t shy away from.”
In essence, Hamlin’s narrative underscores resilience, purpose, and the power of community. Through The More the Merrier and his ongoing work with HeartMates, he continues to turn personal tragedy into a mission to inspire others to face fear and embrace life’s challenges with courage.
